Diploma of European Cardiologist - General information
In order to facilitate high quality standards
in cardiology and to facilitate mobility in Europe, EBSC has
defined specific criteria which candidates for the Diploma
need to statisfy. See eligibility criteria here.
The criteria for achieving the status of
European Cardiologist do not replace the national requirements.
The Diploma of European Cardiologist is instead a trans-European
award which recognises a high standard of qualification and
promotes harmonisation of standards in cardiology.
A cardiologist may be defined as a
physician who has special expertise and qualifications, which
enable him/her to undertake the diagnosis and management of
diseases of the heart and circulation.
He/she will have undergone several years
of training in the specialty, and will be participating in
Continuing Medical Education. The daily work of a cardiologist
however varies widely both throughout the countries of Europe
and within each country. Some have a clinical outpatient practice
and may also practise as a general medical physician, both
in name and in reality. Others work in a sub-specialist environment,
often in a University with additional commitments to training,
research etc. He/she will usually be in active clinical practice
and will be recognised as a cardiologist by doctors and others
in their own community.
The Diploma of European Cardiologist
is awarded to those who can demonstrate that they have satisfactorily
completed their training. Until 2002 the diploma may also
be granted to any cardiologist who can demonstrate that his/her
training and experience are equivalent to the current guidelines
taking into account their dates of graduation and training.
Applications are reviewed by the EBSC twice
a year and diplomas are awarded at the ESC Annual Congress.
In due course it is anticipated that all clinical cardiologists
in Europe will hold this diploma in recognition of their competence
to practice the specialty.
The status of the diploma is that it testifies
to a level of clinical skill which is recognised and respected
by other cardiologists in Europe.
The diploma is a professional qualification,
and does not confer a legal right to practise cardiology in
a European Country.
In order to practise in a particular country
a cardiologist must be recognised as a specialist in that
country. It is intended that the possession of the diploma
will facilitate recognition of a cardiologist by countries
other than his/her own.
